Around Karnol – Discover South Tyrol

There are plenty of long and short hikes that can be taken directly from the Baumannhof. For example to St. Leonhard above Karnol, to San Andrea via a pretty forest track which is also known as the Kreuzweg or "Way of the Cross”. Another option is the hike to the Ackerboden Hut and then onwards to the Ochsen Alp. Another worthwhile excursion is to the Kneipp facilities in the neighbouring village of Vahrn.

In winter we are only 5 minutes by car from the "PLOSE” gondola valley station. The "PLOSE” is a local recreation area suitable for all families, ideal for skiing and for great tobogganing, and, during the summer months, for countless hikes in the unspoilt natural surroundings.

How to arrive

From the north

Via the Munich - Brenner highway to the Varna/Bressanone highway exit. Continue to Bressanone, Millan and San Andrea.

From the south

Hiking tips

Circular hike Plose - 2486 m

On Brixen's local mountain with a panoramic view - the Dolomite Panorama Trail leads through the southern flank of the Plose to the Schatzer Hut, 1984 m, and offers fantastically beautiful views: the Dolomite towers of the Geisler Group on the other side of the Villnöss valley seem close enough to touch. From the summit of the Monte Forca, 2576 m, there is a panoramic view of the Dolomite mountains to the south. In the north, the Zillertal glacier mountains rise up to 3,500 meters on the horizon. After a pleasant stop at the Schatzer refuge, you return to the Plose cable car (descent).

The "Zirmhöhenweg"

The high street no. 30 starts from the top station of the cable car in Valcroce leading to the upper limit of the forest in a short climb. A comfortable walk takes you across the west slope of Mount Telegrafo to the Buoi hut, offering the hiker beautiful views of the Alpine surroundings and the Bressanone basin. Beautiful hike during the flowering of the rhododendrons from late June to mid-July. Return to Valcroce by the same route (signpost no. 30).

Karlspromenade

So named since 1903, in memory of the first visit of Archduke Karl (later Karl I and last Austrian Emperor, 1887-1922), who stayed in the Guggenberg sanatorium and had a great fondness for this hiking trail. At that time, the path led from the sanatorium over the Rienza suspension bridge to Rivapiana, Castellano and Maria am Sand a Millan. In 1911 Archduke Karl visited the episcopal city again on his honeymoon with his wife Princess Zita of Parma.

Swimming at the natural bathing pool in Lüsen

On hot days, the cool water of the natural bathing pool at the edge of Lüsen will refresh you. A water surface of more than 800 sq.m, a 41 m long water slide and a children's pool guarantee refreshment and swimming fun. This unique water world cleans itself biologically and permits healthy swimming. A large sunbathing lawn and small quiet areas invite you to stay awhile and relax. In Brixen there is also the Acquarena, with an indoor pool and outdoor pool with a sauna area.

"Keschtnweg": Sentiero del castagno

A line of chestnut groves extends from the abbey of Novacella/Neustift near Bressanone along the Isarco Valley to the Renon plateau and down just north of Bolzano to the legendary Castel Roncolo. The path is not only for the autumn season, as the vegetation is so varied that it is fascinating in any season.

Hofburg & Diocesan Museum Brixen

Originally, the Hofburg or Bishop’s Palace in the centre of Brixen is a Medieval city castle that was built in the 13th century. Today’s form is a Renaissance and Baroque building, accommodating the Diocesan Museum and being the setting for different events all over the year.
